Feb 16 – The new year has been off to a great start with performances and exciting news! Here is a roundup of some of the highlights thus far:
The Philadelphia Orchestra and iSing!
One of the highlights thus far were two performances of Yellow Crane Tower with the Philadelphia Orchestra and iSing! Suzhou at the Kimmel Center and Lincoln Center. I was able to attend thanks to the support from the Canada Council for the Arts. The performance was recorded and broadcasted in China on lunar new year.
C/4 Canadian Choral Composition Competition
An annual competition for Canadian composers held by Vancouver-based Chor Leoni, the C/4 Choral Composition Competition selected three composers for their 2023/24 edition. I am excited to be one of the finalists selected across Canada to write a work for their Men’s Chorus, to be premiered in their 2024 season.

LAMP Composition Academy Faculty
I am honored to return to the LAMP Composition Academy as a faculty member this summer! Myself and composer-in-residence Matthias McIntyre lead a two-week festival and workshop featuring distinguished composers and performers and culminating in several premieres featuring Sarah Watts (bass clarinet) and the Verona Quartet.

World Premiere of “Clouds are the Language of the Sky”
Commissioned by pianist Jialiang Zhu with support from the Canada Council for the Arts, my new song cycle was premiered by Jialiang and Emily Lapin in mid-January in Markham and will see repeat performances later in May. The piece sets Chinese language poetry by Edith Yang.
