Program Notes
Unrelenting Sorrow was commissioned by the Toronto Symphony Orchestra for Artistic Director Gustavo Gimeno’s inaugural season as part of their NextGen Project. The piece was originally slated to be premiered in November 2020 in time for Remembrance Day, but was postponed due to the pandemic.
The piece is dedicated to those who have lost loved ones during war, and in recent times, COVID-19. I was interested in exploring the sense of overwhelming sorrow that lingers in times of loss. Having lost a grandparent prior to writing this work, I had a sense of this same feeling and wanted to express it through the canvas of the orchestra.
