Program Notes
Revolution (2021) was commissioned by Korean percussion group SORI Percussion and explores the visceral power of drumming. The title refers to the notion of revolution in its two definitions: the idea of a sudden change in political power or government and the motion of rotation. A steady 5/8 beat led by the Sori-buk invigorate the other percussionists as each repetition of the motif occurs at higher speeds. Just like a political movement, the beat of the Sori-buk represents the leader who inspires others to join the movement which is reflected in the building of tempi throughout. In relation to the second definition, the piece is broken up into several sections where rhythmic imitation creates the feeling of revolving, that is, multiple layers of tempo overlapping and moving at the same time.
