Black Waltz

Duration:                 2 minutes and 40 seconds
Year:                         2016

National Youth Orchestra of Canada, Gary Kulesha Conducting

Program Notes:

Written for the reading session of the 2016 edition of the National Youth Orchestra of Canada, this short work’s title is derivative of a line from G.K. Chesteron’s poem “To Belloc” from the preface to Chesterton’s book The Napoleon of Notting Hill (1904).  The poem actually did not inspire the piece, but the music in this instance came first and then the search for the title afterwards.  The piece is short but wickedly fast, and I wrote it as a concertino for strings in what might become a movement of a larger concerto for orchestra.
