Program Notes:
Originally written for members of Tafelmusik, I created a new version of the piece for the Bedford Trio soon after and expanded the work. When one looks back at events in time, most often we remember certain things but not others and we lose certain details either consciously or subconsciously. I wanted to illustrate this idea musically by using a subtractive form for this piece. Starting with a complete statement of the main theme (mm.1-14), I begin to slowly take notes and accompanying figures away on every repetition, until only a few chords are left at the end. In between the A’ sections, a dreamy episode provides contrast.
