I Wait

Duration: 3 minutes
Year: 2021

Program Notes

Based on a simple text from Psalm 130 verse 5, I Wait (2021) is a song of longing and hope for a cappella chorus.  Having gone through the highs and lows of the lockdown during the pandemic, the last few months in 2021 have led me to return to this theme that is found in the Psalms – to wait patiently and actively for the Lord – as I seek discernment and guidance in life decisions.  The piece begins with layered dissonances which slowly expand and open up into broader tonal landscapes.  I Wait is a reflection of the tension inherent in waiting, of not knowing what the future may hold, but at the same time anticipating with hope a brighter day ahead.

Text: Psalm 130:5 – World English Bible (Public Domain)

5 I wait for Yahweh.
    My soul waits.
    I hope in his word.
