New Works for 2021 (Part 1)

June 1 – We are almost halfway through 2021 and it has been a busy year thus far with many pieces written as well as many projects being prepared for the remainder of the year. This post is a quick summary of the titles that you can expect to hear premiered soon that was created in the first half of 2021.

Commissioned by the International Double Reed Society as part of their 50 x 50 project, To Earth is my first major work for bassoon and piano. The work will be prepared for a virtual performance in the summer this year as well as a live premiere in the IDRS National Conference in Colorado, 2022.

Blank Canvas (2021)

Blank Canvas is a quartet in five movements inspired by painting techniques in the visual arts. The work was commissioned by the Lunenberg Academy of Music for the esteemed Verona Quartet with generous support from the Canada Council for the Arts. A premiere is forthcoming in the Fall of 2021.

Anthems (2021)
for piano four-hands

Inspired by recent events highlighting racial injustice, the work Anthems is a two movement work that explores the narrative of suffering and hope for those who have struggled for their freedom. The work is written for the award-winning Piano Pinnacle, with generous support from the Toronto Arts Council.

Decoupling (2021)
for two sopranos, piano, cello & percussion
10 minutes

Commissioned by the Artsong Collaborative Project led by Alondra Vega-Zaldivar, the theme uniting all works this year is the plight of climate change. I have written a song and text based on the concept of environmental decoupling for the resident chamber ensemble. Recording in the summer of 2021 coming soon.

Stutter-Steps (2021)
for oboe solo
2 minutes

I was invited to take part in the Gabriela Lena Frank Academy which involved an oboe workshop with esteemed performers Kyle Bruckmann and Titus Underwood. The piece Stutter-Steps explores microtones and highly unstable rhythms in a virtuosic piece for the oboe.

Feel free to contact me if you are interested in any of these pieces!
