Stutter Steps

Instrumentation: Solo Oboe
Duration: 3 minutes
Year: 2021

Program Notes

Stutter-Steps is a portrait of a person who has trouble speaking well. The piece portrays the struggle to articulate coherent lines in the midst of a stuttering dialogue. A jittery and metrically unstable piece, the work is also an exploration of the oboe’s colorful upper registers and its ability to articulate quarter tones.

Special thanks to the Gabriela Lena Frank Creative Academy of Music and oboist Kyle Bruckmann for workshopping the piece during the composition process.
