Program Notes
Stepwise (2023) is my second commission for the Esprit Orchestra and is my latest attempt at forging a distinct harmonic language moving forward. The piece is structured as a series of variations on a theme which begins after a short introduction which contains the essence of the harmonic motion to come. The theme which begins at m.10 comprise of angular leaps and jumps and constantly moves through tonal centers in a kaleidoscopic manner which attempts to eschew any sense of tonal resolution. Subtitles such as “Dreams”, “Hocket”, and “Ravvivando” communicates the concept behind some variations, while others are left to the performer’s imagination.

The work is a confluence of three unlikely influences: a walk down Yonge Street in Toronto, Handel’s Messiah, and Coltrane’s Giant Steps. The result is a virtuosic showpiece for the musicians of the Esprit Orchestra that reflects the energy and zest of the cities which we call home. The work was made possible with generous support from the Ontario Arts Council.
