Program Notes
In writing this second piece for harp, I was interested in exploring resonance of the instrument by using harmonics in combination with normal pitches to create a different musical texture. Thematically, the piece speaks to our desire to hold onto things in our life, whether it may be physical or emotional burdens. Letting go is perhaps the most difficult thing to do yet is the only way one can attain freedom from past traumas. The piece in ways mirrors my own human attempt to let go, charting a narrative from the initial desire to an internal struggle to hold on and finally ending with acceptance after many thwarted approaches to resolution.
Release was the winner of the 2019 Lyra Costello Composition Competition, held at the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia.
