Program Notes

  Written for the Gabriela Lena Frank Creative Academy of Music’s 2021-22 cycle, Eternal Peace is a meditation on peace for two singers and string trio.  The words were inspired in part by the Gregorian chant “Pax Aeterna”.  The piece begins with a series of chord progressions that stutter and repeat themselves, which represent a sense of unease that is set in contrast to the words “Eternal Peace”.  The countertenor and baritone intone the titular words repeatedly over various musical backdrops.  In this sense, the singers represent the unwavering peace that transcends the unpredictable ups and downs of the world.
